Sorry 'bout the delay....

I've been writing a post about the zoo. Since I'm still working out how I personally feel about it, it's taken a lot to write! That, and the fact that the first version didn't save - grrrr!!

So, to tide you over until it's done (you know you can't wait!!) I thought I'd share the conversation about nursery rhymes I had with my kiddos tonight. Dylan was singing Humpty Dumpty, which was followed up with Three Blind Mice by Kayla. So I posed the question to them, "why are so many nursery rhymes so sad and mean to animals?" Of course, they didn't know - neither do I really - but came up with an idea to reword the popular nursery rhymes to be cruelty-free!

Here's their first:

Three kind mice
Three kind mice
See how the run
See you the run
The all ran up to the Farmers wife
Who fed them some cheese and kissed them good night
Have you ever seen something so sweet in your life
As three kind mice

Hope you enjoyed it as much as they did coming up with it!

xo,
Sarah

  1. Cute song! Can't wait to see your post about zoos. I struggle with them as well. Our kids love animals and I know it may help facilitate their appreciation of them, but on the other hand I don't want to support caging/cruelty of animals. Still working on my thoughts about them too.

  2. This is a tough one for me too. Our little bear isn't quite 2 yet, so our conversations don't run nearly as deep, but I struggle with many of the kids songs & poems that are out there... even those that bring up fond childhood memories of our own! The bear's favourite song, which she picked up a daycare, is Baa Baa Black Sheep, which, as a vegan, espouses exactly the opposite of what I'd like my kids to learn. That being said, I think conversation (like the one you had with your kids about Three Blind Mice!), and not censorship is key. I look forward to the days when I can really discuss these issues with my little one.

    Thanks for posting!
